Cooley's commitment to attracting, mentoring and retaining an exceptional team of attorneys from as many backgrounds as possible is embedded in our culture. We are dedicated to maintaining a truly diverse workplace that values and celebrates differences – from the way we relate to and support each other, to the way we work together as one firm to meet the needs of our clients.

Today, as we have grown and expanded, this commitment remains through active participation and leadership in local and national minority law organizations, diversity pipeline projects, law school diversity programs and community outreach. The firm's management, hiring and diversity committees work closely together to create programs and policies that advance its diversity and inclusion goals.

For Cooley, true workplace diversity goes beyond hiring people of different backgrounds. It offers all employees the tools, training and mentoring they need to succeed. It embraces the importance of diversity on our client teams. It enables every individual to balance work and family obligations. It looks beyond the firm's four walls, fostering community involvement and participation in local and national diversity initiatives. It includes becoming leaders and contributors in our communities.

Diversity Fellowship

Cooley offers diversity fellowships to outstanding first-year law students as part of our ongoing commitment to recruiting, developing and retaining a diverse and talented team at all levels throughout the firm. The annual fellowship provides a substantial monetary award to assist with law school tuition, as well as a summer associate position.

Affinity Groups

Cooley has several active affinity groups, all of which were formed and are managed by attorneys at the firm. Our affinity groups welcome and encourage participation from all attorneys. The mission and goals for these groups are numerous and include providing a forum and resource for support; participating in recruiting activities; enhancing retention, training and promotion; promoting awareness within Cooley of issues of concern; supporting professional and business development through participation in networking and educational events; identifying opportunities for pro bono work on relevant legal issues; and identifying opportunities to join with clients and community members on initiatives and topics of interest.

Current affinity groups include African American attorneys, minority associates and LGBTQ attorneys.

Women's Initiative

Cooley's women's initiative is led by a woman partner and woman associate from each of our offices. The group's mission is to provide women lawyers with support and mentoring to define and further their success; increase the visibility of women lawyers to the firm's leadership and encourage leadership opportunities for women lawyers; foster business development opportunities for women lawyers; and to host business development events intended to help strengthen relationships among the firm's attorneys and with its clients.

OnRamp Fellowship

Cooley was one of four major law firms to pilot the OnRamp Fellowship, a re-entry platform launched in 2014 that matches experienced female lawyers returning to the profession with law firms. With the support of a one-year, paid training fellowship, women returning to the legal profession have the opportunity to demonstrate their value as practitioners while simultaneously augmenting their experience, skills, and legal contacts. Cooley hired two OnRamp fellows from the inaugural 2014 fellowship class and a third fellow in early 2015, and we remain committed to replenishing the talent pipeline with experienced women lawyers who seek not only to re-enter the legal profession but ultimately to advance into leadership roles.

Diversity Recruiting and Student Outreach

Cooley regularly partners with women and minority law student organizations and participates in initiatives aimed at increasing the number of diverse attorneys both here at our firm and in the legal profession.

Diversity Organization Sponsorships and Participation

In addition to our internal commitment to increasing the diversity of the firm, Cooley regularly sponsors events and organizations that increase awareness and promote diversity in the legal profession and our communities.
