As the eDiscovery counsel and director of information retention counseling at Cooley, Matt focuses on providing strategic guidance to clients in the areas of data and records retention, governance and compliance. His role involves developing and implementing policies and programs at the organizational level to ensure adherence to regulatory and legal requirements governing enterprise information.

With a wealth of experience, Matt offers practical and implementable solutions to address sophisticated data retention and discovery challenges. Collaborating closely with Cooley’s cyber/data/privacy team, Matt assists clients in crafting comprehensive and tailored information governance plans that emphasize best practices and consistent compliance. Additionally, Matt designs crucial corporate governance and compliance policies – such as those related to legal holds, short-form messaging, social media, mobile devices, permissible use and defensible deletion.

Matt’s experience extends to eDiscovery law, encompassing the management of electronically stored information in litigation. Matt is well-versed in the legal and practical aspects of document retention, preservation practices, data collection, evidentiary review and production. Frequently sought after for counsel on eDiscovery best practices, Matt plays a key role in implementing comprehensive eDiscovery readiness programs and playbooks for clients. He provides valuable assistance in evaluating and engaging with eDiscovery vendor partners, along with developing cost-effective discovery plans and budgets.

In prior legal roles, Matt successfully managed discovery in complex commercial litigation matters –spanning antitrust and securities regulation actions, patent disputes, privacy issues, employment disputes and class action matters. His proficiency extends to litigation readiness, data preservation and retention, information management, discovery motions, data review and addressing complex privilege issues.
