Leveraging my engineering background, I help technology companies across all stages of operation acquire patents and provide counsel on patent matters that are fundamental to their business.
Christopher Hutter's practice focuses on intellectual property, with a particular emphasis on patent counseling, procurement and licensing and litigation. His electrical practice focuses on a large number of technological fields including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, fintech, wireless communications, fiber optic communications, lasers, semiconductor devices, computer software and the Internet. His mechanical practice focuses on a wide variety of consumer products and medical devices. He is the former co-chair of Cooley's patent counseling and prosecution practice group.
Chris is recognized as one of the top patent lawyers in the world by Who's Who Legal and is also recognized as one of the top lawyers in the US for patent prosecution by Chambers and Legal 500. In addition, he is named an IP Star by Managing Intellectual Property for his patent prosecution and patent contentious work, and is named a leading patent lawyer by IAM Patent 1000, noted for being a “cutting-edge thinker” and a leader in patent matters involving cybersecurity, software and the Internet.
In the latest edition of Chambers, Chris was noted as being “a strong choice for patent prosecution matters,” with the publication stating, “he works with a wide range of technology-focused companies, offering expertise across a range of licensing and counseling concerns.” Clients note that "Chris is a pleasure to work with. He's very experienced and knowledgeable and brings a very clear and distinct point of view to our discussions." They further state that “he has been very helpful in guiding strategic approaches and also in providing legal guidance in dealing with patent infringement by others." In addition, Chris is an elected member of the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation, a global honorary society of attorneys, judges, law faculty and legal scholars.
Prior to joining Cooley, Chris was an associate at Kenyon & Kenyon. Previously, he supported the Department of Defense as a research engineer at the IIT Research Institute (now Alion Science and Technology) developing engineering capabilities to evaluate the performance and vulnerabilities of electro-optic systems.
