Cooley Recognized Among Law360’s 2022 Illinois Powerhouses

Firm noted for rapid growth, accomplishments in the Midwest
August 12, 2022

Chicago – August 12, 2022 – Cooley was named to Law360’s list of 2022 Illinois Powerhouses, which identifies law firms in the region for handling the biggest deals and highest-profile courtroom battles, as well as making a lasting impact on the law at the state and local level.

Cooley’s inclusion on the prestigious list of five Illinois firms comes just over a year after the firm entered the Chicago market with a 10-partner launch team, driving forward a strategic business priority to serve the thriving Midwest ecosystem – home to high-growth, disruptive companies, a burgeoning venture capital community, and some of the largest and most sophisticated companies, including many of the best-known tech and life sciences brands in the nation.

In its profile of CooleyLaw360 highlighted how the firm “hit the ground running” in 2021, and “is already making its mark helping Windy City companies navigate multimillion-dollar transactions and advising clients staring down litigation under Illinois’ unique privacy laws.”

Rick Ginsberg, co-founder and partner in charge of Cooley’s Chicago office, spoke with Law360 on one of the firm’s unique value propositions – its capability to represent companies from their early startup days through an initial public offering, which has enabled the Chicago office to ramp up so quickly. “To be able to do this work at scale, repping hundreds of companies at various levels of their growth, you need a firm committed to that – understanding that those sorts of companies drive a lot of business over their lifetime,” he said.

Cooley was selected as an Illinois Powerhouse in part for advising Capstone Surgical Technologies on its $50 million sale to Globus Medical; G2.com on its $157 million Series D financing round; Tempus Labs on its acquisition of an oncology clinical contract research organization; and the underwriters for Rent the Runway’s $357 million IPO, among other matters.

The firm also was recognized for its strategic growth and strength in litigation. “Cooley’s litigators in Chicago have already made headway in practice areas where there’s no shortage of legal work to be done: white collar defense, government investigations and privacy matters, particularly in the biometric privacy arena,” Law360 noted. The publication also detailed Cooley’s ongoing representation of the nation’s largest digital and print publisher, Dotdash Meredith, in a putative class action brought under the Illinois Right of Publicity Act.

Chicago-based Cooley partner Bobby Earles provided insights on the office’s impressive bench of litigators and collaborative spirit, which is characteristic of the firm. “Cooley went and found exactly the practitioners it wanted, at the height of their game substantively, but also people who wanted to work with other people, and who wanted to be in a collaborative environment,” he said. “The sort of hallmark of both Cooley globally and specifically in our office is that there isn’t a lot of separation between the lawyers who do transactional work and the lawyers who do more disputes-related work. We’re all talking to each other pretty much all of the time.”
