Press Release

Cooley Partner Named Distinguished Leader in NYC

July 2, 2019

New York – July 2, 2019 – The New York Law Journal has recognized Kathy Pakenham, partner-in-charge of Cooley’s New York office, as one of its Distinguished Leaders of the Year.

The awards recognize 23 lawyers in leadership roles who have achieved impressive results in the past year, demonstrating clear leadership skills leading to positive outcomes.

Widely recognized as one of the top tax litigators in the US and ranked among the best in her field by publications such as Chambers USA and Legal 500, Pakenham is a first-chair litigator and adviser to Fortune 500 companies. She represents clients in tax disputes and works on some of the most significant tax cases in the country.

Pakenham sits on the firm’s management and compensation committees and has been the co-head of the firmwide tax practice since 2013. Most recently, she stepped into the role of partner-in-charge of Cooley’s New York office just months shy of its momentous move to Hudson Yards, which marked a groundbreaking next phase for Cooley. Pakenham was instrumental in bringing the new space – recently highlighted in Crain’s Coolest Offices in New York feature – to fruition, gracefully managing the critical moment for the firm from inception to execution.

In 2017, Crain’s New York Business recognized Pakenham on its Leading Women Lawyers in New York City list, which highlights the city’s most talented women lawyers who juggle distinguished careers and exceptional civic and philanthropic activities.

New York Law Journal’s 2019 Distinguished Leaders will be honored on October 23 at the New York Legal Awards at Tribeca 360° in New York City.
