About Todd

With 10+ years of experience in patent prosecution and litigation, Todd has assisted companies of all sizes in acquiring, protecting and managing their intellectual property rights in the pharmaceutical industry.

At Cooley, Todd focuses on chemical and pharmaceutical intellectual property matters, including drafting and prosecuting patent applications before the US Patent and Trademark Office and international patent offices. He devises and executes strategies to secure second- and third-generation patent coverage to extend pharmaceutical product exclusivity (e.g., formulation and dosing regimens) and prepares opinions on patentability, validity, freedom to operate, infringement and enforcement.

Todd also has experience in Hatch-Waxman and patent infringement litigation matters involving small-molecule and immuno-oncology therapeutics. He has assisted clients in several phases of litigation, including pre-suit analysis and strategy, discovery, claim construction, invalidity and noninfringement contentions, expert reports, and vetting deposition materials.

Before practicing patent law, Todd worked as a medicinal chemist in the pharmaceutical industry developing small-molecule central nervous system therapeutics for the treatment of neurological disorders, ultimately resulting in co-inventorship on several patent families and a $140 million startup pharmaceutical acquisition. His academic tenure includes postdoctoral studies at Yale University and the Scripps Research Institute, with his research on total synthesis and synthetic methodologies published in numerous top chemistry journals, including Nature Chemistry, Journal of the American Chemical Society and Angewandte Chemie.
