About Sumiyya

Sumiyya focuses primarily on business litigation, with particular experience in cyber and data privacy matters, criminal regulatory work and product regulatory litigation. Before joining Cooley, she gained paralegal experience in civil litigation and property law.

Sumiyya assists with case management through document review, drafting pleadings, disclosure exercises, legal research and trial preparation. Within the firm's cyber and data privacy practice, she supports clients navigating data breach responses and regulatory scrutiny. In the criminal regulatory space, she manages case files and assists with responses to law enforcement investigations, helping clients meet procedural and evidentiary requirements under tight deadlines. She also has experience in product regulatory matters, including product recall management, multi-jurisdictional notification exercises and horizon-scanning projects, researching upcoming legal developments and assessing their potential impact on clients and their products. Her business litigation experience includes bundling and legal research in support of complex commercial disputes.

As a member of the firm's pro bono committee, Sumiyya regularly supports both the legal and operational aspects of Cooley's pro bono initiatives, including organising volunteer programmes and charity fundraising events.

Sumiyya is a member of the firmwide Black Business Professionals Affinity Group, which provides a safe and open space for Cooley's Black business professionals to connect, celebrate successes, build relationships and discuss the unique challenges faced within the community and the legal profession. She served as co-chair of the inaugural affinity group and was also co-chair of the inaugural London staff committee, acting as a liaison between London staff and management by raising and communicating matters affecting colleagues in the office.
