Kenichi Hartman

Dr. Kenichi (Ken) Hartman focuses his practice on patent portfolio strategies for biotechnology and medical device companies. His work includes patent preparation and prosecution, strategic patent counseling and intellectual property due diligence. He has extensive experience working closely with both startups and established companies on strategic patent portfolio management and development of core intellectual property assets. In addition to his prosecution practice, Ken also has experience in post-grant proceedings, patent invalidity and infringement, freedom-to-operate analyses and patentability analyses.

Ken began his patent career at the Manhattan office of Ropes & Gray in the life sciences section of the IP rights management group. He then spent 10 years working in Tel Aviv advising on patent matters for Israeli hi-tech and life science companies as well as universities and hospitals before joining Cooley.

In addition to his patent experience, Ken brings specialist technical knowledge gleaned from a 12-year research career at Applied Materials, Brandeis University, the RIKEN Brain Science Institute (Japan) and Harvard University. He earned his PhD in Neurobiology from Harvard University in 2006 having conducted his doctoral research under Dr. Venkatesh Murthy and was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School at the laboratory of Dr. Carla Shatz, a world-renowned Neurobiologist and a pioneer in early brain development. Ken’s Neurobiology research career focused on combining molecular and cell biological tools, electrophysiology and fluorescent microscopy to investigate synaptic plasticity and neuronal circuit function from a computational/systems perspective.
