Kealan Fallon
About Kealan
As a European and UK patent attorney and former academic chemist, Kealan advises clients across the chemical and materials sectors on drafting and prosecuting global patent portfolios, with particular experience in post-grant opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office. His practice spans technologies including small-molecule organics, chemical compositions and formulations, nanomaterials, bioconjugates, synthetic methods, polymers, and medical and electrical devices, in industries ranging from pharmaceuticals to coatings. Kealan works with clients at all stages of commercialisation, from leading academic institutions and university spinouts to small and medium-sized enterprises and large multinational corporations.
Before entering the intellectual property (IP) profession, Kealan obtained his PhD in organic chemistry from University College London, after which he was awarded prestigious postdoctoral fellowships to conduct independent research at Columbia University, Harvard University and the University of Cambridge. Kealan is an author of over 20 peer-reviewed journal articles, which have received more than 2,000 citations collectively, and he is a named inventor on three granted patents arising from his research. His academic work was highly interdisciplinary, spanning chemistry, materials science and physics – experience that now informs his ability to understand and protect complex inventions that cross traditional technical boundaries.
Kealan is an active member of the wider chemistry and IP communities. He regularly participates in careers panels, has guest lectured on innovation and entrepreneurship courses at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School, and has provided pro bono strategic advice to early-stage greentech ventures. He is also involved with several IP Inclusive communities, including IP Out and IP Futures, and values opportunities to support a more inclusive and connected IP profession.
When he’s not reading technical documents, Kealan can usually be found exploring new sights with his Canon AF35ML film camera in hand.
