Claire Groden
About Claire
Claire is an experienced litigator, appellate advocate and strategic advisor. As an associate in Cooley’s Supreme Court and appellate practice group, she represents clients in high-stakes litigation, with a particular focus on appellate matters. Claire has briefed significant cases in the US Supreme Court and federal courts of appeals.
Claire previously served as a Bristow Fellow in the Office of the Solicitor General at the US Department of Justice. There, she assisted with briefing and argument preparation for more than a dozen cases before the Supreme Court, advised the Solicitor General on whether to authorize government appeals and successfully briefed and argued a case in the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. In private practice, Claire’s experience has ranged from serving on trial teams to authoring briefs filed in the Supreme Court and federal courts of appeals. Claire has particular experience in complex questions of constitutional law and statutory interpretation, but her litigation, advocacy and advising skills cut across industries and subject matters.
Claire clerked for Judge Cornelia T.L. Pillard of the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit and Judge Beryl A. Howell of the US District Court for the District of Columbia. In law school, Claire served as an editor of the New York University Law Review and was a Furman Academic Scholar. At graduation, Claire received the Martin Lipton University Graduation Prize for achieving the highest academic average in the graduating class. She also received the Benjamin F. Butler Memorial Award for unusual distinction in scholarship, character and integrity. Before law school, Claire worked as a journalist. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Dartmouth College.
