Andrew Keith

Andrew is special counsel in the patent counseling & prosecution practice. He specializes in the areas of patent portfolio strategy and management, with a particular focus on advising emerging biotech and pharmaceutical companies.

Andrew has counseled clients and developed patent portfolio strategies in technology areas such as small molecule and biomolecule therapeutics, including cancer therapeutics, pharmaceutical formulations, kinase inhibitors, covalent inhibitors, radiotherapeutics, gene therapy, medical devices and diagnostics.

Andrew frequently advises in IP matters related to merger and acquisitions, initial public offerings and launching commercial drugs, tailoring the patent portfolio strategy to the business needs of the client. Andrew also has experience in matters involving patent litigation, post-grant proceedings, including strategies and counseling for Hatch-Waxman litigation, and drafting freedom to operate, invalidity and patentability opinions.

Prior to joining Cooley in 2011, Andrew was a patent attorney at a business law firm in Washington DC. Before entering law school, he worked for more than seven years performing research and development in both the biotech and pharmaceutical fields.

Andrew received his MS in chemistry, with an emphasis in organic chemistry, from the University of Miami, with his research focusing on modifying drug target kinase enzymes for kinase inhibitor drug discovery.
