Litigators of the Week: Winner

The American Lawyer’s Litigation Daily
June 27, 2025

The American Lawyer’s Litigation Daily recognized a cross disciplinary Cooley team, led by partners Bobby Ghajar, Kathleen Hartnett, Phillip Morton and Mark Weinstein, as Litigators of the Week for its victory on behalf of Meta in the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) copyright case. Judge Vince Chhabria of the US District Court for the Northern District of California ruled that Meta’s use of copyrighted books to train its Llama AI was “highly transformative” and that the books’ authors failed to prove it harmed the market for their works.

The team also included Isha Agarwal, Kayla Blaker, Matt Brigham, Colette Ghazarian, Juan Pablo Gonzalez, Jordan Landers, Judd Lauter, Teresa Michaud, Cole Poppell, Elizabeth Reinhardt, Matthew Ritter, and Liz Stameshkin.  Thanks also to Kelly Murata, Jeannine Douglas, Brooke Lumer, Jessica Alvarez, Jerry González, Jocelyn McIntosh, Noni Whitner, and Cynthia Squire for the invaluable support.

The team was also recognized in December 2023 for representing Meta in a class action lawsuit.
