August 12, 2019

San Francisco – August 12, 2019 – Cooley advised Automattic, the parent company of online publishing platform WordPress, on its agreement to acquire Tumblr from Verizon. Lawyers Jamie Leigh, Matthew Bartus and Ian Nussbaum led the Cooley team advising Automattic on the acquisition.

“Tumblr is one of the web’s most iconic brands,” said Matt Mullenweg, CEO of Automattic, in a news release. “It is an essential venue to share new ideas, cultures and experiences, helping millions create and build communities around their shared interests. We are excited to add it to our lineup, which already includes WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Jetpack, Simplenote, Longreads and more.”

Automattic believes in making the web a better place, with the goal of democratizing publishing so that anyone with a story can tell it, regardless of income, gender, politics, language or where they live in the world.
