Daily Journal Names Four Cooley Partners Top in IP

Palo Alto – August 21, 2017 – The Daily Journal has recognized Cooley litigation partners Heidi Keefe, Mika Reiner Mayer, Michael Rhodes and Nan Wu in its annual report on the Top Intellectual Property Lawyers in California. Cooley ties for second by number of leading IP lawyers recognized.

Keefe, based in Palo Alto, represents some of the hottest tech companies in the world in high-stakes patent cases. The Daily Journal highlighted her recent work for Facebook, in which she resolved several lawsuits by knocking out patent claims. A former astrophysicist and registered patent lawyer, her knowledge spans a variety of technical disciplines, from software to medical devices. In other recent accolades, she was named a Top Woman Lawyer by the Daily Journal and a Women Leader in Tech Law by The Recorder.

Mayer – who is also based in Palo Alto and arrived at Cooley last year – has been recognized five consecutive years on the report. Widely known for her strategic insights and deep understanding of business, she is one of the most sought-after lawyers in patent prosecution and strategic portfolio management for life sciences startups and established companies alike, and the go-to diligence counsel in Silicon Valley for life science companies and their investors. “In her roughly one-year tenure she’s led 30 investor-side and company-side due diligence reviews,” the Daily Journal notes, “including on behalf of Patricia Industries in its $640 million acquisition of LABORIE.”

Rhodes, one of Cooley's most prominent litigators, is also a five-time honoree. In the IP realm, he represents technology and internet companies in matters involving patents, copyrights, trade secrets and trademarks, as well as being one of the country’s leading privacy lawyers. The Daily Journal names Cooley clients including Facebook, Oculus VR, Google, eBay and NVIDIA Corp. In his profile, Rhodes – who is based in San Francisco – describes his job as an IP litigator as being akin to a storyteller, deploying all of the narrative devices, including character development and building tension.

Wu, also based in San Francisco, specializes in patent issues and has extensive experience working with investors, private companies and public companies in the biotech industry. Her practice focuses on developing patent strategies and portfolios that support business objectives and provide leverage at the negotiation table. The Daily Journal highlights her work with China-based pharma company BeiGene, which recently signed a $1 billion deal with Celgene – “the largest amount paid for the out-licensing of a novel drug discovered in China.”
