Three Cooley Partners Named "Top 100" Lawyers by the Daily Journal

September 17, 2013

Palo Alto, Calif.  – September 17, 2013 – Cooley LLP announced today that three of its partners have been named to the Daily Journal's 2013 "Top 100" list, which recognizes 100 attorneys from across California whose "work is having the widest impact" and "changing an industry or the law or the society as a whole."

The Cooley attorneys on this year's list are litigation partner Michael Rhodes, who has made the list for three consecutive years; business partner Eric Jensen, who was named in 2011; and litigation partner and Cooley's Chairman, Stephen Neal.

The Daily Journal describes Rhodes as "standing at the intersection of law and the innovation of modern technology, and what he calls ‘new and disruptive business models.'" Recently, Rhodes, who co-chairs Cooley's privacy practice, has defended Google Inc. in a consolidated set of privacy class actions in which the plaintiffs allege that automated scanning of email invades their privacy.  He also recently achieved approval of a novel settlement for longtime client Facebook in one of the largest privacy class actions of all time – the class size being estimated at around 150 million people.

Jensen, the Daily Journal writes, "likes to see the connections and interplay between technology companies he represents in public offerings." In his interview Jensen discusses his work on recent high profile IPOs, including those of ServiceNow and Ruckus Wireless. According to Jensen, "trying to be a counselor and a strategic adviser is the fun part of our job, rather than just being a legal technician."

In naming Stephen Neal, the Daily Journal focused on his nationally acclaimed litigation and trial expertise across an array of areas, including his ongoing work for Qualcomm Inc. in a patent infringement action brought by ParkerVision Inc. The trial is scheduled for this October. Neal notes that the patents at issue involve complex technology, "It presents this great challenge of figuring out how to take this complicated technology and make it accessible to a bunch of jurors. You don't want to do this through sleight of hand, but by persuading them that you are on the right side of it."
