Cooley Expands Los Angeles Footprint to Downtown

Downtown Los Angeles – September 13, 2022 – Cooley announces a second location in the greater Los Angeles area, expanding the firm’s presence from Santa Monica to downtown LA. As the firm celebrates the 10th anniversary of its Santa Monica office, the downtown expansion is a testament to the firm’s commitment to the LA area and reflective of Cooley’s accomplishments since its 2012 launch in the region. Partner John-Paul Motley, who joined Cooley in March 2022, will serve as the new office’s partner in charge. 

“Our new downtown LA presence is key to our continued growth in the greater Los Angeles area,” Motley said. “Being downtown will enable us to continue to build out Cooley’s full-service capabilities in LA with prestigious legal talent, including adding to our bench of leading litigation and business lawyers. I look forward to playing a leading role in driving the firm’s growing presence in Los Angeles.”

Adding to Cooley’s strengths in advising many of LA’s most disruptive companies, the expansion will provide current and future clients in the area with more of the firm’s elite litigation and corporate services, including securities litigation, white collar, restructuring, regulatory, capital markets, public company advisory, and mergers & acquisitions. 

“Over the last 10 years, Cooley’s Santa Monica office has been very successful in supporting many of the fastest-growing public and private companies in the region, and has grown to more than 75 attorneys since its launch in 2012,” Tom Hopkins, partner in charge of Cooley’s Santa Monica office, said. “Now was the right time to add a downtown office as we continue our growth in the LA market and look to further meet the needs of our clients that are located throughout Southern California.”

Downtown LA is Cooley’s 18th location worldwide and will open in a temporary space in the Wells Fargo Center at 355 S. Grand Ave., with plans to secure a permanent space in the future.
