Press Release

Juneteenth – For Racial Justice

June 17, 2020

New York – June 17, 2020 – Cooley will be closed on Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day.

We will use the time to reflect on, celebrate and honor Black history and culture, as well as to examine the role each of us has in standing up as antiracists and being allies in change.

Cooley’s initial June 4 commitment of $450,000 to the Equal Justice Initiative has since been augmented by more than $290,000 in individual donations from Cooley partners and employees, meaning that the firm’s total pledge to EJI stands at close to $750,000. We are encouraged that the donation is heading to such a powerful and action-oriented organization, but we are also aware that this is just a start.

We must make up for generations of failure. We must all be in this fight for the long haul. Cooley will remain vigilant in demanding nothing less than true equality, justice and opportunity for all.

To encourage education, engagement and action, Cooley’s Black Attorney Affinity Group, together with others in the fight, has compiled a resource kit to deepen and expand understanding of antiracism and allyship.
