The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) Privacy. Security. Risk. (P.S.R.) conference is the premier event focused on technology’s potential to solve privacy challenges – and how to respond when technology causes the challenges.

Career-advancing training and workshops were available the weekend before the 2024 P.S.R. conference began. The main event is two days of keynote speakers, breakout sessions and networking opportunities. Attendees learned practical solutions, gained operational insights, and connected with peers and sector insiders ready to share their experiences.

US State Privacy Crash Course: What Is New and What Is Next

Compliance requirements for US privacy program operations are shifting rapidly, with each of the past three years resulting in a near-doubling of the number of state consumer privacy laws. Twenty comprehensive laws and counting are on the books, plus special laws for health, data brokers, biometrics, kids’ data and artificial intelligence. Keeping pace with the changes is a full-time job, but not everyone has the time. This practical, half-day workshop helped participants understand the commonalities in US legal requirements so they can build a world-class privacy operation that meets and exceeds those requirements, while remaining mindful of how state regulations diverge.

As part of this four-hour session, Cooley cyber/data/privacy partner Dave Navetta moderated a panel titled “Operationalizing the Rapidly Changing Landscape into Your Privacy Program.” Using an interactive fact pattern, the panelists discussed how to efficiently and effectively integrate evolving legal regulations into privacy programs.

Closing General Session

Responding to the complexity of digital regulation and risk is a top strategic priority for businesses. Cooley cyber/data/privacy partner and global practice group co-chair Travis LeBlanc moderated this session, where experienced professionals discussed how their companies have begun to vest C-suite executives with responsibility for broad digital governance domains – and how existing leaders are seeing their remits expanded and elevated.
