The Magistrate Judge Consent Program in the Central District of California: What You Need to Know

The Litigation Section’s Brown Bag Lunches provide lawyers with the opportunity to speak with judges about a wide variety of topics. This year, Brown Bag Lunches covered federal and state court topics and are free to Los Angeles County Bar Association members.
An option that can be highly effective for counsel and their clients who are litigating in the US District Court for the Central District of California is the magistrate judge consent program, under which the selected magistrate judge becomes the assigned judge for all purposes in the district court. We heard from two of the Central District’s magistrate judges about the program, their experiences, benefits for litigants, and tips for successfully navigating with your client and opposing counsel on the decision of whether to consent.
