The Circadian Code to Extend Longevity
Salk Institute Lunch Featuring Dr. Satchin Panda
Event summary
To aid local efforts in minimizing the spread of COVID-19, we are taking a precautionary step to cancel this event. We hope to reschedule and will share updates as more information becomes available. Thank you.
Salk Institute Professor Satchin Panda will share his latest discoveries related to circadian clocks and what these findings mean for human health.
Having a healthy circadian rhythm can balance hormones, brain chemicals, gut microbiome, organ function and reduces inflammation. These benefits add decades of healthy life. Dr. Satchin Panda’s circadian rhythm research has discovered that light and meal time have profound health impact. He found a new light sensor in the eye which measures blue light to tune brain functions ranging from falling asleep to throbbing migraine pain on a sunny day.
This simple discovery has spawned a new field of light therapeutics which enables smartphones to display “night shift” mode. It has also led to innovations where blue filtering eyeglasses affect users like taking a new type of sleeping pill. Dr. Panda has also discovered that the number of hours between our breakfast and dinner may be just as important as the day’s calorie counts.
