John G. Lavoie is a partner in the Real Estate practice group and a member of the firm's Business Department. He joined the firm in 2008 and is resident in the Reston office.
Mr. Lavoie focuses his practice on real estate transactions with emphasis on the acquisition and disposition of commercial real estate, including the purchase, sale, development and leasing of office, industrial, retail and technology-driven properties. He has substantial experience in the representation of landlords, tenants, lenders and borrowers in the leasing, finance, and repositioning of commercial property in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and the Mid-Atlantic region. He has represented both institutional and individual landlords and tenants involved in major lease transactions, data center leasing and development and corporate headquarters projects.
Before joining Cooley, Mr. Lavoie was a partner and member of the Executive Committee at Watt, Tieder, Hoffar & Fitzgerald. Prior to practicing law, Jack was a senior associate with the Staubach Company. At Staubach, he managed the process of site identification and lease negotiation for several major clients in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Mr. Lavoie has been listed as Virginia Business' Legal Elite in Real Estate/Construction from 2003 – 2005 and in the list of Best Lawyers in America since 2006. In 2007 and 2008, he was a Chambers USA's Top Real Estate Lawyer in Virginia. In 2008, Jack was selected by The Washington Business Journal as the winner for the "Top Real Estate Transactions Lawyer" in Washington,DC.
Mr. Lavoie received his J.D. in 1990 from Georgetown University and his B.A. from the Catholic University of America in 1987. He is a member of the Housing and Land Use section of both the District of Columbia and Virginia Bar Associations. Mr. Lavoie is also a member of the Greater Washington Commercial Association of Realtors. Jack serves as General Counsel to the Northern Virginia Chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Parks, as well as The Neediest Kids, Inc. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia.
