Timothy G. Patterson is a partner in the Cooley Business department and a member of the Compensation & Benefits practice group. He joined the Firm in 1981 and has been resident in the Palo Alto office since 1985.
Mr. Patterson specializes in the areas of employee benefit plans, executive compensation and ERISA. His experience includes regularly counseling corporate, partnership and tax-exempt clients on the design, qualification, administration, amendment and termination of all types of employee benefit plans. These include 401(k) and other qualified retirement plans, health and welfare benefit plans, nonqualified deferred compensation arrangements and stock compensation programs. His employee benefits practice also has entailed advising clients on the treatment of employee benefits plans and executive compensation arrangements in corporate merger and acquisition transactions as well as on the use of ESOPs and similar plans to finance corporate transactions.
Mr. Patterson has represented individual executives in their employment compensation matters, and he has experience with a variety of corporate and individual income tax issues as well as with general corporate law, in particular with closely held corporations and their shareholders.
Mr. Patterson received his law degree in 1981 from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. At Hastings, he was elected to the Order of the Coif and was a member of the Thurston Society. He was a member of the Hastings Law Journal in 1979 - 1980 and an associate editor in 1980 - 1981.
For his undergraduate studies, Mr. Patterson attended Stanford University, where he received his Bachelor's degree in 1976. At Stanford, he was a four-year member of the men's varsity basketball team. After graduating from Stanford and prior to law school, he lived in Sweden for two years, where he was a professional basketball player.
Mr. Patterson is a member of the American Bar Association and a member of the taxation sections of both the American and California bar associations
