Todd Bontemps is special counsel in Cooley's Trademark, Copyright & Advertising group. He joined the Firm in 1998 and is a resident in the Palo Alto office.
Since 1994, Mr. Bontemps has specialized in intellectual property protection and strategic branding, both domestically and internationally. His practice focuses on trademark, copyright, domain name and corporate brand protection.
Prior to joining the Firm, Mr. Bontemps was associated with the Silicon Valley office of Pillsbury Madison & Sutro, and worked in house with The British Petroleum Company, p.l.c. in London, England. During his two years with BP's Group Trade Marks Mr. Bontemps specialized in international trademark licensing.
Mr. Bontemps has presented lectures and training seminars on a variety of trademark, trade dress, comparative advertising and domain name related topics. He lectured on "individualized" online China marketing campaigns and associated IP enforcement risks at the 2008 International Bar Association Asia Forum (Hong Kong), presented a seminar on trademark co-branding at the 2004 INTA Annual Meeting (Atlanta) [Co-Branding: Managing The Opportunity, T.S. Bontemps and R.W. Boad, 2004], and presented his paper, Color As A Trademark in The United States (Spring 2002), at the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (ITMA) International Meeting (London). Other speaking engagements include guest lecturing for the Stanford University Graduate School of Business as well as organizing and presenting at the High Tech Europe intellectual property seminar held at Stanford University.
He received his law degree in 1992 from Santa Clara University School of Law, and a B.A. degree in English from UCLA in 1987.
He has been a member of the State Bar of California and the American Bar Association since 1992 and is also a member of the International Trademark Association, MARQUES (Association of European Trade Mark Owners), and an Overseas Member of the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (UK).
