Robert Vieth is a partner in the Litigation department of Cooley LLP in Reston. He joined the Firm in 1999.
Mr. Vieth has experience in a wide range of general business litigation matters, including securities litigation, corporate governance claims, real estate disputes, commercial contract cases, thefts of trade secrets, business tort actions, claims against fiduciaries, and other litigation. Mr. Vieth's clients have included technology companies, real estate companies, banks and individuals.
Mr. Vieth has tried jury and non-jury cases in state and federal courts. Although Mr. Vieth has appeared in many courts across the country, he has deep experience in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and other courts in the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Mr. Vieth has also handled many arbitration proceedings under the auspices of the American Arbitration Association, JAMS, the American Health Lawyers Association and other arbitration services.
Mr. Vieth has an extensive appellate practice, having served as first chair on important appeals in the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Virginia. Prior to joining Cooley, Mr. Vieth was a partner in McGuireWoods LLP in its Tysons Corner, Virginia office. He received his J.D. from Duke University School of Law in 1984. He attended Duke University, where he received an A.B., magna cum laude, in 1981. In 1984 and 1985, Mr. Vieth served as a law clerk for United States District Judge Charles R. Richey of the District of Columbia.
Mr. Vieth is admitted to practice in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. He has served on the Fifth District Committee of the Virginia State Bar, responsible for matters involving lawyer discipline. He has served as a faculty member for the Virginia State Bar's mandatory course on professionalism.
He is also a member of the firm's Pro Bono Committee.
