Nishan Kottahachchi is an associate in the Trademark, Copyright, and Advertising practice group and a member of the Cooley Litigation Department. Mr. Kottahachchi is also a member of the Firm's Diversity Committee. He joined the firm in 2007 and is resident in the Washington, DC office.
Mr. Kottahachchi specializes in litigation, counseling, prosecution, and licensing in the field of trademark, copyright, and advertising law. His practice focuses on counseling clients on the selection, clearance, and prosecution of company and product names, the development of comprehensive trademark and branding strategies, and the enforcement of intellectual property rights. Mr. Kottahachchi has experience handling trademark, copyright, and advertising litigation matters in federal court and before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. He also manages and oversees domestic and foreign trademark clearance and prosecution efforts, and counsels clients on copyright, advertising, and domain name issues.
Prior to joining Cooley, Mr. Kottahachchi practiced as an associate in the Trademark and Copyright group of Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP. Mr. Kottahachchi also practiced as an Intellectual Property associate with Harvey Siskind Jacobs LLP in San Francisco.
Mr. Kottahachchi received a J.D. from American University Washington College of Law in 2002, where he served as an Articles Editor of the American University Law Review. He was also a member of the Glushko-Samuelson Intellectual Property Law Clinic, where he won the Clinical Legal Education Association Outstanding Student Award. Mr. Kottahachchi earned a B.A. in Political Science from Rutgers University in 1999.
Mr. Kottahachchi is admitted to practice in California and the District of Columbia.
Mr. Kottahachchi is currently a member of the Famous & Well-Known Marks committee of the International Trademark Association (INTA) and was formerly a member of the Trademark Reporter committee. He is also a member of the Copyright Society and Intellectual Property sections of the Washington DC and California State Bars. Mr. Kottahachchi was formerly the co-chair of the American Bar Association Special Committee on Promotion and Marketing Law and formerly served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Northern California South Asian Bar Association.
