Jennifer Stewart, Associate

Jennifer Stewart is an associate in the White Collar & Regulatory Defense and Commercial Litigation practice groups and a member of the firm's Litigation Department. Ms. Stewart joined the firm in 2008 and is resident in the Boston office.

Ms. Stewart represents public and private companies and individuals in a broad range of matters arising out of business and commercial disputes. Ms. Stewart also focuses on internal investigations and white collar defense work, representing companies in complex criminal and regulatory matters. She has conducted numerous internal investigations on behalf of both private and public companies and their audit committees. Ms. Stewart has worked on a variety of other litigation matters, including securities and fraud actions, real estate disputes, antitrust matters, contract disputes, employment matters, intellectual property cases and bankruptcy matters, including representing trustees, senior secured creditors and unsecured creditors in bankruptcy-related litigation. Ms. Stewart has also been active in pro bono matters and represented a prison inmate involved in a dispute over religious rights before the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts.

Ms. Stewart's representative matters include:

  • Conducted an independent investigation of a pension fund, as requested by the auditors, due to alleged misconduct and self dealing by the fund's chairperson, which included co-authoring a report on the same.
  • Conducted an internal investigation for the audit committee of a public company prompted by federal criminal investigation into false statements made in connection with a federal investigation into marketing practices.
  • Represented an insurance company in a hurricane premiums investigation conducted by a State Attorney General's Office.
  • Represented the past CEO of a biotech company in a whistleblower and defamation dispute which grew out of a federal investigation into marketing issues, which included obtaining dismissal of all claims from the plaintiff.
  • Represented a competitive energy supplier in a complex contract dispute which included claims of breach of contract and unfair business practices.
  • Represented a biotech company in a multibillion dollar breach of contract and fraud action.
  • Represented the trustee in the bankruptcy of a major financial firm and brokerage house.

Prior to joining Cooley, Ms. Stewart was an associate at Bingham McCutchen LLP and articled at Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP in Toronto, where she focused on white collar work, securities litigation and bankruptcy litigation. Ms. Stewart also worked for a telecommunications manufacturer in Canada in sales and account management.

Ms. Stewart earned her J.D. for the University of Toronto School of Law in 2003, where she was elected president of the Student Council and won the Cressy Award for Leadership. She earned her B.A. from Dartmouth College, graduating magna cum laude in 1999.

Ms. Stewart is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. She is a member of the Bar of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Bar of the Province of Ontario.
