Steven Friedlander, Partner

Steven L. Friedlander is a partner in the Cooley Litigation department. Mr. Friedlander is resident in the San Francisco office and has been with the Firm since 1992.

Mr. Friedlander specializes in employment law and general business litigation. His practice includes litigation in the areas of wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, whistleblower retaliation, employee raiding, trade secrets and other proprietary information issues, class actions, collective actions, contracts, wage and hour law, stock options, non-competition agreements and unfair competition. He also regularly provides counseling in these areas and on other human resources issues. In addition to court litigation, Mr. Friedlander represents clients in administrative proceedings as well as arbitrations, mediations and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.

Mr. Friedlander has been a member of the Firm's Hiring Committee, Summer Associate Committee, Associates Committee, Associate Review Committee, and Pro Bono Committee. He is the designated Pro Bono partner for litigation matters in the Firm's San Francisco office. He also performs various practice management roles for the Firm's Employment and Labor Group.

Mr. Friedlander has served as a Deputy District Attorney in the Alameda County District Attorney's office, handling evidentiary hearings and jury and court trials.

Mr. Friedlander graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law in 1990. While at Boalt Hall, he was on the Moot Court Board, and was the Senior Articles Editor of the California Law Review. While a law student, he authored an article that was published in the California Law Review, and in practice he has published various employment related articles. He has also been a guest lecturer at the San Francisco Law School and U.C. Hastings College of the Law, acted as a volunteer moot court and appellate advocacy judge at Boalt Hall, and has lectured at numerous professional seminars on employment related matters. In 1986, Mr. Friedlander received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Berkeley.

Mr. Friedlander was named as a recipient of the prestigious California Lawyer Attorneys of the Year (CLAY) award in the March, 2005 issue of California Lawyer. This award is given annually to California lawyers who "changed law, broke new ground in various practice areas and business sectors, and substantially influenced public policy." He has been regularly recognized as a Northern California "Super Lawyer" in the employment field.

Mr. Friedlander is a member of the California and New York State bars and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit and the U.S. District Court, Central, Eastern, Northern and Southern Districts of California. He is also a member of the San Francisco Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Association of Business Trial Lawyers, where he is on the Board of Governors for the Northern California chapter.
