David Van Etten is an associate in the Cooley Business department and is active in the Firm's Clean Energy and Technologies and Emerging Companies practices. He joined the firm in 2008 and is resident in the Palo Alto office.
His practice consists of general corporate and securities law matters, with an emphasis on the representation of emerging companies, venture capital funds, and public companies.
Mr. Van Etten earned a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall). At Boalt, he received the Moot Court Oralist Award in the First-Year Written and Oral Advocacy course and the American Jurisprudence Award in the Modern Financial Products course. In extra-curricular contests, he placed first in the Berkeley Law School Negotiations Competition and second in the western region of the Saul Lefkowitz Moot Court Competition. He served as Articles Editor of the Berkeley Journal of International Law. He is author of the note, "Everyone in the Patent Pool: U.S. Philips Corp. v. Int'l Trade Comm'n," 22 Berkeley Tech. L.J. 241 (2007). During law school, he served as an extern for the Honorable Richard C. Tallman of the U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit.
Mr. Van Etten earned a M.A. in English from the University of Wisconsin in 1998 and a B.A. in English, summa cum laude, from Santa Clara University in 1996.
Mr. Van Etten is a member of the State Bar of California.
