Cooley Partners Named Top Washington Lawyers

Washington, DC and Reston, VA.  – September 21, 2009 – Two Cooley Godward Kronish attorneys won top honors in the Washington Business Journal's annual "Top Washington Lawyers" competition. The competition, which garnered more than 300 nominations, honors one attorney in each of 16 separate practice areas.

Douglas P. Lobel, a partner in the firm's Reston, Va. office, was named the winner in the Corporate Litigation category and Connie Bertram, a partner in the firm's Washington, DC office, was named the winner in the Employment Litigation category.

Lobel, who is co-head of the firm's national commercial class action practice, is a seasoned trial attorney who has a diverse commercial and criminal litigation practice representing clients in a wide range of industries, including government contracting, financial services and telecommunications.

Bertram, head of the Labor and Employment practice in the Washington, DC office, has built a substantial and sophisticated employment litigation and compliance practice.  She has particular expertise representing government contractors in False Claims Act whistleblower lawsuits and administrative and enforcement proceedings before the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP).

Lobel and Bertram were two of four Cooley attorneys who were nominated as finalists, the second highest number of finalists for any firm.   Former Top Lawyer honorees Mark Looney and Adam Ruttenberg were finalists in the Zoning and Technology categories, respectively.

Ruttenberg, who is based in the firm's Reston office, is the head of the firm's national technology transactions practice and focuses his practice on all aspects of technology transactions, including counseling, structuring and negotiating such deals. Looney is a Reston, Virginia-based partner in the firm's Real Estate practice representing major developers and national, regional and local companies in all areas of land use.
