Cooley Litigator Don Stern Appointed by Boston Police Commissioner To Lead Independent Investigation
Boston, MA – July 17, 2008 – Cooley Godward Kronish LLP Litigation partner Donald K. Stern has been appointed by Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis to lead an independent investigation to review the facts and circumstances of the death of Emmanuel College student David Woodman. Mr. Woodman died June 29 at the age of 22, 11 days after he stopped breathing while under arrest following the Boston Celtics championship victory.
Based in Boston, Stern is a member of Cooley's Litigation department and its White Collar & Regulatory Defense practice group. He joined the Firm in 2008. A former U.S. Attorney, Stern served as chair of a similar seven-member commission appointed by the Boston police commissioner to investigate the circumstances leading to the death of a college student accidentally killed by the Boston Police in the crowd that gathered after the Red Sox-Yankee American League Championship Series game in 2004. In 2002, he served as chair of a blue-ribbon commission appointed by the Governor to investigate allegations involving the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department.
